Mathias Niepert is a professor at the University of Stuttgart and leads the MLS Lab at the Institute for Artificial Intelligence. He is affiliated with SimTech, is an ELLIS member and IMPRS-IS faculty member, and serves as Chief Scientific Advisor at NEC Laboratories Europe.
Before joining Stuttgart, he held research and management roles at NEC Laboratories Europe and was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Washington. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Scientific Computing from Indiana University.
Research
Mathias Niepert develops machine learning methods for structured data and scientific simulation. His work combines graph representations, geometric symmetries, and physical constraints with probabilistic and generative modeling. Recent research includes controllable molecular generation, learning approximately equivariant representations, and efficient neural solvers for partial differential equations.
